Godzilla
Godzilla is the most iconic kaiju in history, first appearing in Ishiro Honda's 1954 masterpiece — a somber allegory for nuclear devastation in post-war Japan. Over seven decades, the franchise spans multiple continuities across Japanese and American productions.
Toho Eras
Showa Era (1954–1975): 15 films ranging from the bleak original to increasingly campy crossovers. Introduced iconic monsters: Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Hedorah. Godzilla shifted from villain to Earth's defender.
Heisei Era (1984–1995): A reboot ignoring all sequels after 1954. Darker tone, advanced special effects, and a continuous storyline ending with Godzilla's death in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.
Millennium Era (1999–2004): Six standalone films, each a direct sequel to only the 1954 original. Includes Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), Toho's 50th anniversary celebration.
Reiwa Era (2016–present): Shin Godzilla (2016) — Hideaki Anno's acclaimed political satire reimagining. Godzilla Minus One (2023) — Takashi Yamazaki's period piece, winner of the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Legendary MonsterVerse
Legendary Entertainment's American-produced shared universe beginning with Godzilla (2014), directed by Gareth Edwards. Godzilla is portrayed as an ancient apex predator — an alpha Titan maintaining balance in nature. The MonsterVerse continuity includes Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024).
In this continuity, Godzilla draws power from radiation, engages in territorial dominance battles with other Titans, and maintains an uneasy coexistence with humanity monitored by the Monarch organization.
