Ultraman

Ultraman is one of the most successful media franchises in Japan, created by Eiji Tsuburaya (the special effects master behind the original Godzilla). Since the original Ultra Q (1966) and Ultraman (1966–67), the franchise has produced over 30 television series, dozens of films, and hundreds of kaiju opponents.

The core premise: warriors of light from the Land of Light in Nebula M78 bond with human hosts to fight giant monsters threatening Earth. Each Ultra has a time limit (signaled by a Color Timer on their chest) and unique abilities. The franchise explores themes of self-sacrifice, duality of identity, and humanity's potential.

Key Eras:

  • Showa (1966–1981): The original Ultraman, Ultra Seven, Ultraman Ace, and others establish the multiverse of Ultra heroes.
  • Heisei/New Generation (1996–present): Ultraman Tiga, Dyna, Gaia, Mebius, and the New Generation series (Ginga, X, Orb, Geed, Z, Decker, Blazar) modernize the formula.
  • Shin Ultraman (2022): Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno's acclaimed film reimagining, paralleling Shin Godzilla's approach.

The franchise features some of the most iconic kaiju in tokusatsu: Baltan, Zetton, Gomora, Red King, Bemular, and the dark Ultra — Belial. Unlike most kaiju franchises, Ultraman presents monsters as enemies to be defeated by a humanoid giant, inverting the typical formula.
